Rara Neagra or under the local name Babeasca Neagra is a grape variety used mainly to make red wines. It is mainly grown in Moldova, but also in Romania, Ukraine and the New York region of America, where it is called Sereksiya Charni. Dry, light wines with a strong fruit flavor are obtained from this range. Since Babeasca Neagra is a very old grape variety, there have been two mutations over time, one gray and one white. Babeasca Neagra is harvested in late autumn, so this variety is very resistant to low winter temperatures.
Certain Babeasca clonal mutations have appeared in different regions such as Pinot Noir or Grenache. With an area of about 4500 hectares, it is the second most cultivated grape variety in Romania.
According to Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, Băbească neagră tends to produce pale, light, fruity red wines with notable acidity and a distinctive sour cherry note. The pink berry color mutation Băbească gri tends to produce mineral white wines with lingering lime notes on the finish
